“Above the cloud with its shadow is the star with its light. Above all things, reverence thyself.” This quote, attributed to Pythagoras of Samos by the quasi-religious Pythagoreans, his followers. They believed in empowerment through the self and were fiercely humanistic.
I came across this quote late last year and it struck me so hard I committed it to memory. Around the same time I heard about my friend Pepe’s new film he entitled “Above The Clouds”, a story of a guy who’s trying to reconnect with his father after a family tragedy. On January 1st, 2013 I wrote just one item as my supposedly New Year’s Resolution: 1. Climb a mountain.
I struggled to connect all of these things that moved me and it led to one single image: the infamous ‘Sea of Clouds’ at the summit of Mt. Pulag. I’ve heard of this mountain many times before but only now did it become very significant.
By some turn of events, an invite came as a Facebook status update from one of my most well-travelled friends, Robbie, who maintains a travel blog. He has long been a source of inspiration and I’ve just decided on a major upheaval in my professional life. I really needed a break or at least something major to look forward to. I said yes immediately. Robbie had to ask if I was sure! I sure am and I started the journey of a lifetime.
At the summit, I was fidgety. I was there, the clouds were there but the sun isn’t up yet. To distract myself, I congratulated people who just summited, high fived everyone I bumped into.
At around 530 the sun’s rays started streaming into the sea of clouds. I sat on the grass and had a moment of absolute clarity. I grabbed my camera and shot the sun the moment it made its triumphant entrance.
I was filled with a joy I may never be able to describe. One thing’s for sure: I may have realized this dream but there will be more adventures.
Above everything, even the clouds, even the stars, is my spirit.

A fashion shoot under the sea with the whale sharks of Oslob, Cebu, Philippines.

Shot by Kristian Schmidt and Shawn Heinrichs, noted fashion and marine life photographers, the series aims to ~~highlight local marine conservation efforts~~ in Oslob in a way that’s never been done before.

EDIT:

Many have noted (and correctly) that far from conservation efforts, what is happening in Oslob, Cebu may in fact be a form of exploitation.

This article by local marine conservation group Save Philippine Seas (whose founder, Anna Oposa, is a good friend) offers 5 good reasons why the practice of feeding the whale sharks must stop.

Indeed, far from being an effective conservation area, Oslob has turned into a tourist trap in dire need of reform into becoming a more sustainable haven for the sharks. I hope everyone else who would reblog/read/be amazed about this post, click the links above and learn more about the plight of these gentle giants.
